According to The New York Times, Americans eat more bananas than apples and oranges combined, a legitimate case of comparing apples and oranges – and bananas. This super food is well known as a great source of potassium, but bananas also provide fiber, vitamin C, manganese, and vitamin B6.

More to the CFYL point, they are also an important food to have around the house if you are going through cancer treatment. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, chemotherapy and radiation as well as tumor growth can cause intestinal complications like diarrhea. If this happens, it is important to eat potassium rich foods, like bananas, to replace electrolytes.

Not only are bananas one of the easiest foods to take with you as a snack, naturally “packaged” as they are, but they are also easy to digest and can provide essential nutrients and energy even if you have an upset or weak stomach. In addition, studies have also found that consumption of fresh fruits, especially bananas, may help protect against kidney cancer.

It’s not important to buy organic bananas, since nature has neatly wrapped them. But especially if you are on chemo, always wash the fruit before peeling or cutting, since you don’t want to bring microbes from the skin onto the fruit’s pristine insides.

If you get slightly green ones, they’ll keep longer. Bananas contain more natural sugars than most other fruits, so it’s important to include a wide range of different fruits in your diet, including those that contain less sugar such as blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries.

If you have trouble getting in your recommended amount of fruit every day, keep some bananas on the counter, or throw one in your bag for an easy portable snack with a quick, natural boost of energy.  For an even heftier dose of energy, add some protein with a tablespoon of almond or unsweetened peanut butter, or make a sandwich with sliced bananas on some wholegrain bread.
