It's Summertime!
Our free cooking classes will be coming back in the Fall. In the meantime come and see what's going on in your local farmers' markets by joining CookforyourLIFE! on a field trip to the Union Square Greenmarket. This is the best time of the year to see the bounty of what's available at you local farmer's markets!
What's the point of going on a field trip to look at vegetables? I know what they are!
But do you........?
Knowing how to shop for produce and what to look for is part of the cooking experience. Our local farmers grow a huge variety of local produce, all of it available at the city's Greenmarkets. Aside from what you'd expect, hey grow all kinds of great tasting heirloom fruits and vegetables that you won't find anywhere else.
Come and check it out for yourself with CookforyourLIFE! and our guide from the Greenmarket. We will also be checking out what's good in store at your local supermarket by doing a walk-through of the Union Square A&P after our Greenmarket visit.
OK - but what's the difference where I buy my produce? It's all good for you right?
The local fruits and vegetables you find at our Greenmarkets are grown in their proper season and picked at their peak. They are bursting with nutrients that are often lost in the industrially farmed produce that you find in your local supermarket. Industrially farmed produce is usually picked unripe and gassed so it won't spoil while it travels to get to you It can take over a week to get from farm to shelf. This is even true of much organic produce.. We've all bought great looking peaches and tomatoes that disappoint in the mouth, mealy in texture and with no taste. This doesn't happen with local produce. Fruits and vegetables taste like they should. It's not for nothing that the best restaurants in the city shop for produce at the Greenmarkets!
Fine, but I don't live anywhere near Union Square.......
During the summer and fall, there are Greenmarkets throughout the 5 boroughs. When you come on our field trip, we will provide you with maps to show the ones nearest you!
If you don't want to wait to come on our tour, there's a link provided below to help you find your local market.
Alright, alright, I get the point, but I'm on a budget and the Greenmarket produce has got to be much more expensive than at my local supermarket......
Yes, it's true some of the Greenmarket's organic produce is expensive, but it is grown by small farmers who really care about their crops. CookforyourLIFE! has developed a comparative shopping chart to give out on our field trips so you can easily see where to find the best value for your dollar for a variety of grocery staples and fresh produce. We think you'll be very pleasantly surprised by the prices of much of the produce you can find at your local Greenmarkets. They compare very favorably with supermarket prices, in fact many things are cheaper! They are also a lot fresher, more nutritious and have been treated with a lot less pesticide than industrially grown fruits and veggies. Imagine, you can actually ask the farmer about how he, or she, grows their crops!
So I'll come. How do I get there? When's the next CookforyourLIFE! field trip? CookforyourLIFE! is planning our next field trip for the end of July. We will be posting the date and details at the beginning of July.
