With the high-fat movement that’s become more popular in the last couple of years, one drink, which is constantly mentioned, is bulletproof coffee. It was created by Dave Aspery, who discovered the idea of putting butter in coffee while on holiday in Tibet, where yak butter is commonly put in tea. Asbury found that the yak tea helped improve his energy levels and lose weight, and he created the bulletproof coffee movement.

According to the website:

“Bulletproof Coffee is not your average latte. It’s a high-performance drink that has a massive impact on your energy and cognitive function.”

Is this a healthy idea or just another hyped-up diet gimmick?

What is it?

To make your coffee “bulletproof,” add one to two tablespoons of unsalted, grass-fed butter or ghee, and up to two tablespoons of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. Combine the ingredients in a blender to get a frothy, creamy mixture similar to a latte. The theory behind the drink is that, by avoiding carbohydrate and drinking a high fat drink, your body will enter ‘ketosis’ which means it’s burning fat instead of carbohydrates.

Having such a high fat breakfast should, in theory, sustain you for the morning with ease. Fat is the most filling nutrient; therefore bulletproof coffee may be helpful for someone who finds it hard to avoid snacking constantly in the morning. This satiety could then help towards weight loss, if the person ends up consuming fewer calories than they normally would.  The fats in the coffee would also provide fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. It is also true that caffeine is a stimulant, so will likely make you feel more energized.

While a high fat drink should be filling, studies have shown that liquids are not as filling as having solid food, therefore some people may find that they are hungry after bulletproof coffee, even though it contains a large amount of calories. If you end up eating more due to hunger, you could end up increasing your weight.

It is generally recommended that people drink bulletproof coffee instead of breakfast in the morning. The coffee will provide you with fat, but missing a good breakfast means you miss out on the chance to get good nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals that are contained in a healthy oatmeal, smoothie or egg-based meal such as a frittata. This is a time where most Americans do not get enough fruits, vegetables and whole grains in their diet, and already consume too much saturated fat, which is known to increase cholesterol. It is generally recommended that we have heart-healthy fats like monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts and avocados. A breakfast containing these ingredients would therefore provide a better fat profile, while also providing protein.

Having such a large amount of fat may also cause you some bowel discomfort, as fat can be difficult to digest for some people.

Bulletproof coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet, however to have it daily may put you at risk of nutritional deficiencies, not to mention you miss out on many delicious breakfast recipes. If you do decide to drink it, be sure to account for it over the rest of the day to avoid unnecessary weight gain.
