Although Cook for Your LIFE promotes healthy cooking, we want everyone to get the best nutrition they can to help them through treatment. Sometimes that has to come in a bottle or can. I recently introduced Cook for your LIFE to Enu, a promising new nutrition supplement shake that has now become a CFYL supporter.
In the fight against cancer, foods that are packed with nutrients give you the tools your body needs in this battle and the calories to maintain a healthy weight.
As a registered dietician active in the cancer community, I generally recommend whole foods as the first choice in the battle against cancer, but there are times when you just feel too sick to run to the kitchen to put together a healthy meal or snack, even something as simple as the recipes you’ll find on this website. When you have no appetite whatsoever or are too exhausted to even eat, this is the perfect time to turn to a nutrition supplement, like Enu. After all, the goal is to maintain the best nutrition that you can in order to stay strong.
Most nutrition supplements come in liquid form and provide at least 250 calories a serving along with an array of vitamins and minerals. Over the years I’ve tried several of these products and find them either too sweet or with an aftertaste reminiscent of the added vitamins and minerals.
They did the job, but I always felt there could be a better option. Then I came across Enu.
Enu is a high calorie, high protein shake that was developed by a dietitian who specializes in oncology. At 44 calories per ounce, Enu compares favorably with other popular brands at 31 calories. It also has more than twice the protein ounce for ounce. Keep in mind that protein requirements increase during cancer treatment and post-surgery. While an 11-ounce container has 60 grams of carbohydrates, only 16 of those are sugars (both natural and added), significantly lower than other products. I also liked its “clean” taste and an impressive ingredient list that includes non-GMO whey and soy proteins, quinoa, brown rice derivatives, and coconut oil. For sweeteners, there’s rice maltodextrin, tapioca syrup and stevia. No high-fructose corn syrup. It is also gluten and lactose free. While nutrition supplements aren’t for everyone, Enu is a product that provides calories and nutrients in a very tasty and easy-to-use form derived from natural sources (a serious plus for us over here at CFYL).
The founders of Enu, after leaving their work in the pharmaceutical industry where they developed both chemotherapy and anti-nauseau medications for cancer patients, sought to fill the hole they saw within the nutritional supplement shake industry. Believing that there were too many artificial ingredients and far too many sweeteners in the current market, they teamed up with doctors and registered dieticians to create Enu and we’re happy they did.
Enu is only available online. Although its higher quality makes it more expensive than traditional products, discounts are given on bulk purchases. Sign up for our newsletter to receive exclusive coupons from Enu, and feel free to check out their website for more information.
