In season: Most lettuces are readily available year-round in most markets, although they peak in fall and spring.
How to buy: Find the crispest and brightest leaves you can. They should also be blemish-free. Boxed lettuce is convenient but expensive. Romaine, bib, and red or green leaf lettuce can be bought by the head at a cheaper price.
Storage: Rinse and dry your lettuce well, then refrigerate in an air-tight plastic bag for up to five days. The lettuce should give a strong odor once it is past its prime.
