September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. To honor it, we have put together a deliciously easy collection of foods that contain lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant which has been linked to a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, lycopene can collect in prostate tissues, which seems to help prevent damage. Some studies suggest this may be the reason lycopene has such potential in the fight against prostate cancer. Luckily lycopene is found in a number of our favorite fruits and veggies particularly the red ones, tomatoes, red peppers, watermelon, pink grapefruit and red cabbage, plus in the tropical fruits mango, guava and papaya. It’s also found in smaller quantities in some green veggies too — asparagus, and parsley being high up on the list. And the best part is that lycopene becomes more bioavailable to our bodies when these fruits and veggies are cooked! Marinara sauce can actually be good for you, as are soups and chilis cooked with tomatoes! Check out these yummy lycopene packed recipes and eat your way to prostate health!
