In season: Buy canned or dried black beans year-round.
How to buy: If purchasing dried beans, be sure to buy them from a busy store — older beans take longer to cook. Look for... beans that are whole and not too broken. When buying canned beans, do not buy cans with dents in them or any visible rusting.
Storage: Use cooked beans within 3 days. Canned beans should be drained and rinsed to remove excess sodium, and then stored in the fridge in an airtight container. Keep dried beans in a cool dark place. Freeze beans without their liquid in a resealable bag.
