Hi! I am Eileen Fuentes and I am a breast cancer survivor and a Patient Navigator at Columbia University Medical Center. I want to improve the overall health of breast cancer survivors. One way to stay healthy is to ignore the center aisles of the super markets and shop around the outer rim of the store. This newsletter will help you choose better snacks. Try our Baked Spice Chickpea recipe at the bottom!

Find a Better Snack
Finding Best Snacks in the Grocery Store
Do you ever crave a sweet or crunchy snack? They’re often found in the center aisles of the grocery store and in the checkout lines. Try to shop around the outer walls (not in the center) of the grocery store instead to pick healthier snacks.
The image below is a typical supermarket layout. The red boxes show where the center aisles are – where a lot of fat and sugar are hiding. Try to shop around the outer edge – where the green boxes are – for healthiest options, naturally low in fat and sugar.
Recipe
Instead of chips, try these baked chickpeas as a crunchy snack instead! They taste just as good (or better!) – but are less expensive and healthier because you can make them yourself.
Baked Spiced Chickpeas
Makes: 6 servings
Ingredients:
- 2 (15 ounces) cans chickpeas, rinsed and drain
- 2 ½ tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
1.Preheat oven to 400OF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
2.Dry chickpeas with a kitchen towel or paper towels.
3.In a large bowl whisk the oil, turmeric, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, salt and black pepper. Add the chickpeas and toss to coat evenly.
4.Transfer chickpeas to the prepared baking sheet and spread them out in a single layer.
5.Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden and crispy, in the middle rack of the oven. Remove from the oven and let them cool. Serve immediately.
