Cutting Back on Fat and Sugar by Managing Your Plate
An easy way to cut back on fat and sugar at meals is to follow the MyPlate guidelines:
- Make half (50%) of your plate fruits and vegetables
- Make one-quarter (25%) of your plate whole grains or starchy vegetables
- Make on-quarter of your plate lean (without visible fat) protein
Adding a side of dairy foods is recommended about 2 times per day.

Here are some examples of correct portion sizes for the different food groups. We’ll learn more about the different food groups in upcoming newsletters – so stay tuned!
